Our mission statement is to support elders who are socially isolated and/or functionally impaired and adults with disabilities through activities and services that promote independence. Out and About is a day program serving the Lamoille Valley Region.
Through an array of supportive services, Out&About assists its participants and their care givers to maintain a quality of life which can give them continued personal growth and individual choice. This helps to avoid premature placement in costly, long term care institutional settings. The heart of our mission is accomplished through our arts-based program. The program fosters engagement, creativity, companionship and a shared sense of accomplishment and appreciation. Participants find joy and wellness in the act of creating and thus minimize the impact of loss, depression, chronic pain, isolation, and other limiting condition.
Out and About Adult Day Services, formally known as Lamoille Area Adult Day Care Center, opened its doors at the Morrisville Senior Center in April of 1986. There were only three participants of the program attending three days a week. In only a few short months enrollment increased to fifteen participants and a larger location was needed.
The program moved the Farr House in June of 1987. Along with the move other changes were made including the hiring of the first executive director, Nola Danslow. She influenced the artistic direction the program started to take. She encouraged the visual arts and creative writing, which led to art shows of the participants’ work and publication of participants’ writings in the “Solstice Review” in 1989, 1990 and 1992.
In August of 1992, Out and About Adult Day Services moved to its current location in Morrisville and in March of 1993 a new Executive Director was hired, Glo Webel. She continued on the path of creative influence established by the previous director by holding “Gallery Shows” of the participants’ art to both feature and sell in order to raise funds for the program. She also managed a large addition project to expand the space allowing Out and About the opportunity to double its capacity to 25 to 50 participants a day.
Currently the program continues to have some influence from its artistic beginnings. Out and About still has an art instructor on staff and many of the daily activities are creative in nature, but hrough the years the basis of the program has shifted towards a health and wellness model. We currently staff a registered nurse and several licensed nurse’s aides who provide medical monitoring and personal care daily as necessary. Along with our focus on health we promote overall wellness through positive attitude and having fun.
Out and About Adult Day Services is beginning its 25th year of service. With each passing year there have been more changes and new challenges but our goal remains the same. Out and About will continue to meet the needs of the community and strive toward providing support to the participants of our program so they may maintain their independence, quality of life and joy for living.
